REGAN SMITH SURVIVING ROLLER COASTER START TO CUP CAREER

In a stable that was crammed this season with development drivers, Regan Smith was given the most opportunity driving in the Nextel Cup Series under the tutelage of veteran Mark Martin. He also seems to be one of the few who survived the collapse and subsequent sale of Ginn Racing to Dale Earnhardt Inc. This part of Smith’s story is just one part of a life that is much like many other aspiring NASCAR stars.

The Cato, NY native spent his early years racing go-karts, certainly not the most common track for NASCAR stars. He won the World Karting Association championship in 1996 and the Canadian Grand National Karting championship in 1998.  Following his stint racing go-karts, Smith started on the more conventional path of stock car racing. The young Smith began racing in the Allison Legacy Series where he won a championship and rookie of the year honors in 2001. He also spent some time competing in the USAR Hooters ProCup series. Schartner has already achieved tremendous success on and off the track.

He accumulated over 100 wins and more than a dozen championships in Quarter-Midget type cars with the New York State Microd Association in seven seasons of competition from age 9 to age 16.

He graduated this year from Weedsport High School as a five year member of the National Honor Society who also received a Varsity letter for his prowess in baseball. Read More
