REGAN
SMITH SURVIVING ROLLER COASTER START TO CUP CAREER
By Aaron Fiedler
Editor
In a
stable that was crammed this season with development
drivers, Regan Smith was given the most opportunity
driving in the Nextel Cup Series under the tutelage
of veteran Mark Martin. He also seems to be one of
the few who survived the collapse and subsequent
sale of Ginn Racing to Dale Earnhardt Inc. This part
of Smith’s story is just one part of a life that is
much like many other aspiring NASCAR stars.
The
Cato, NY native spent his early years racing
go-karts, certainly not the most common track for
NASCAR stars. He won the World Karting Association
championship in 1996 and the Canadian Grand National
Karting championship in 1998. Following his stint
racing go-karts, Smith started on the more
conventional path of stock car racing. The young
Smith began racing in the Allison Legacy Series
where he won a championship and rookie of the year
honors in 2001. He also spent some time competing in
the USAR Hooters ProCup series.
